Joshua 1–5
Before Israel conquered the land, God first formed His people. Joshua 1–5 is not a record of military victories but of spiritual preparation. Courage, faith, remembrance, and holiness all precede conquest.
God was not merely preparing Israel to win battles. He was preparing them to become the kind of people who could faithfully carry His covenant into the Promised Land.
Joshua repeatedly pauses before the first battle. Commands are given, covenants renewed, memorials raised, and hearts prepared. The victories that follow are built upon what is established here.
The following stones preserve what Joshua 1–5 teaches about becoming God's covenant people.
Joshua 1
Story
After Moses died, the Lord commissioned Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan. Three times God commanded him to be strong and courageous, grounding that courage in His presence and His Word.
Tension
Where does true courage come from when the future is uncertain?
Revelation
Biblical courage is not confidence in oneself but confidence in the presence of God. Joshua is commanded to meditate on the Book of the Law because lasting courage grows from trusting what God has spoken.
Memorial Stones
- 01Courage begins with God's presence.
- 02Strength is rooted in obedience.
- 03Meditate on God's Word day and night.
- 04God's promises precede God's commands.
- 05Leadership begins by following God.
- 06Be strong and courageous because the Lord goes with you.

Joshua 2
Story
Rahab hid the spies, confessed the Lord's sovereignty, and tied a scarlet cord in her window as a sign of the covenant that would preserve her household.
Tension
Who truly belongs among the people of God?
Revelation
Faith, not ancestry, becomes the defining mark of God's people. Rahab trusted the God she had only heard about and found refuge through covenant.

Joshua 3
Story
The priests stepped into the overflowing Jordan carrying the ark, and the waters stopped. Israel crossed on dry ground as the Lord went before them.
Tension
Will God's people step forward before they see the miracle?
Revelation
God called Israel to consecrate themselves before revealing His power. The river did not part until the priests stepped into it. Faithful obedience precedes visible deliverance.

Joshua 4
Story
Twelve stones were taken from the Jordan and set up at Gilgal so future generations would ask what they meant and remember what God had done.
Tension
How should God's people preserve the memory of God's faithfulness?
Revelation
God commands His people to remember because future faith is strengthened by remembered faithfulness. Memorials become teachers for generations yet to come.
Memorial Stones

Israel renewed circumcision, celebrated Passover, ate the produce of the land, and Joshua encountered the Commander of the Lord's army before Jericho.
Tension
How should God's people prepare before entering the battle?
Revelation
God's presence is not enlisted into Israel's plans; Israel must submit to God's. Before the first battle, the covenant is renewed and Joshua removes his sandals because holy ground belongs to the Lord.
