Spiritual Adultery: No Knowledge of God

With chapter 4, Hosea shifts from the personal story to direct confrontation. God has a lawsuit against His people. The charge: no faithfulness, no steadfast love, no knowledge of God in the land.

The divine lawsuit

"Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land."

This is covenant lawsuit language. God brings formal charges. He calls witnesses. The evidence is overwhelming.

"There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land."

These three absences summarize everything: no faithfulness (emeth), no steadfast love (chesed), no knowledge of God (da'at Elohim).

Without these, everything collapses. What follows is the evidence:

"There is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed."

When the knowledge of God disappears, moral chaos follows.

The land mourns

"Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it languish, and also the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea are taken away."

Human sin affects all creation. The land mourns. Animals languish. Fish disappear. Ecological disaster follows spiritual disaster.

This is not random. Creation is bound to humanity's vocation. When humans abandon God, creation suffers.

The environmental crisis is ultimately a theological crisis.

The priests bear blame

"Yet let no one contend, and let none accuse, for with you is my contention, O priest."

The priests are singled out. They should have taught the people. They should have modeled faithfulness. Instead, they led the corruption.

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me."

The priests rejected knowledge. Therefore God rejects them from priesthood. They forgot the law of God. Therefore God will forget their children.

"The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame."

Prosperity did not produce gratitude. It produced sin. The greater their numbers and wealth, the greater their rebellion.

Those who teach others bear greater responsibility for what they teach.

Priests feed on sin

"They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity."

The priests actually benefit from the people's sin. More sin offerings mean more meat for the priests. They have an economic interest in continued transgression.

This is religious corruption at its worst: profiting from the sins you are supposed to confront.

"And it shall be like people, like priest."

The people become like their leaders. Corrupt priests produce corrupt people. Judgment falls on both.

The spirit of whoredom

"A spirit of whoredom has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the whore."

Spiritual adultery is portrayed as a kind of possession. A spirit of prostitution controls them. They sacrifice on mountaintops and burn offerings under oaks, poplars, and terebinths.

The daughters become prostitutes. The brides commit adultery. But God says He will not punish the women alone:

"For the men themselves go aside with prostitutes and sacrifice with cult prostitutes, and a people without understanding shall come to ruin."

The men are leading the corruption. They visit prostitutes and participate in fertility cult rituals. The women are not more guilty than the men.

Sexual immorality and spiritual infidelity are joined. They always have been.

A warning to Judah

"Though you play the whore, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty."

Hosea turns briefly to the southern kingdom. Do not come to Gilgal or Beth-aven (house of wickedness, a mocking name for Bethel, house of God). Do not swear by the Lord there.

Israel is stubborn like a stubborn heifer. How can the Lord feed them like lambs in a broad pasture? They have joined themselves to idols. Leave them alone.

There comes a point when God says: leave them to their choices.

Final reflection

Hosea 4 diagnoses the root problem: no knowledge of God. Everything else, the violence, the sexual immorality, the corrupt leadership, the ecological disaster, flows from this.

Knowledge of God is not merely information about God. It is relationship with God. It is covenant intimacy. It is the foundation of all faithfulness.

When this knowledge is rejected, chaos follows. And responsibility falls heaviest on those who were supposed to teach it.

Closing prayer

Father, give us knowledge of You, not just facts but relationship. Expose the places where we have rejected truth for convenience. Raise up faithful teachers who lead Your people in righteousness. In Jesus' name, amen.
